This system allows for a patient to speak with a Doctor on the day they decide they need our help or advice
When you call us, our reception staff will take your name and make sure they have your correct telephone number (you can give a mobile if you wish).
They will ask you ‘what is the nature of the problem’.
The information will be treated in strictest confidence.
You do not have to tell the receptionist why you wish to speak with a Doctor, but it is very helpful to the Doctor who will be calling you back on the phone.
It is important to stress that our receptionists do not triage the call when patients telephone to book a call with a Doctor. The receptionists do not make medical decisions.
All patients who request to talk to a Doctor will do, unless it is agreed that it is something which another team member can help with, for example a referral or other Administrative query
What happens when the doctor calls?
The Doctor will ring you and discuss the problem with you and workout what to do next. You may want advice, or a prescription, or you may need to come in. The Doctor will arrange an appointment if you need to be seen.
Usually this will be the same day, but thew system is very flexible and you can ask for a later day if you wish.
How soon will the doctor call?
The Doctor will ring you back as promptly as they can, but please bear in mind some days are busier than others. Monday mornings for example are very busy.
We will give you an indicative time when the Doctor aims to ring you back.
If you are at work and need to speak at a particular time, please tell the receptionist.
Do I need to call early?
No. However if you call us earlier in the day it allows more time to book you a face to face appointment if that is what is required. If patients don't ring us until late afternoon then it might not leave much time to offer the patient a same day appointment.
How does this help patients?
It ensures that the patients who need to be seen by a Doctor do get seen. It cuts down the wait to see a Doctor.
We speak to the patient the day they call and can offer appointments the same day at the surgery if needed or on a day and time to suit.
It avoids wasted time coming in to the surgery when you don’t need to.
It helps ensure the Doctors are available to see those patients who need their expertise.
Urgent appointments will be available on the same day, although not always with the doctor of your choice.
If you are unable to attend your appointment for any reason please do let us know. Wasted appointments mean a longer waiting time for everybody.
Patients who persistently fail to attend booked appointments may be asked to find an alternative practice.
